The GEF MedProgramme SCCF workshop on nature-based solutions (NbS) for coastal adaptation was held in Tangier, Morocco, on 4-5 November 2024. Plan Bleu/RAC successfully convened more than 70 participants to work together on advancing coastal adaptation through nature-based solutions in a workshop hosted by Hassan Bahhar, Director of the Direction régionale de l'environnement de Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma, Morocco.
PAP/RAC's delegation shared lessons learned on how to effectively integrate societal, green, and grey solutions for comprehensive coastal adaptation. PAP/RAC held two sessions:
- NbS, coastal adaptation, and the importance of adaptive planning and management - On planning for coastal adaptation (Daria Povh Škugor, Director) and Typology of NbS in the coastal zone (Marko Prem, Deputy Director)
-
NbS and Integrated Coastal Zone Management in Morocco- The example of the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma Regional Coastal Plan (Ante Ivčević, Programme Officer)
In addition to PAP/RAC's team, our regional and national experts Majid Mansour and Hicham Bouziane presented the lessons learned from the coastal planning for the region TTA, its success as strategic planning for adaptation, and its connections with the NbS.
The workshop was high-profile, with the participation of Atifa Kassam, Head of Climate Change Adaptation Programs and SCCF Project Manager within the MedProgramme (UNEP Nairobi), who presented an enriching intervention on ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) for resilient livelihoods and healthy communities. Robin Degron, Director of Plan Bleu/RAC, highlighted the essential role of well-adapted forests as NbS in addressing water scarcity and strengthening climate resilience in the Mediterranean region. Finally, Tamara Brajović and Đurđina Bulatović from the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Development of the Northern Region, Montenegro, shared the experience from their country with Moroccan colleagues.
