The International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), namely its Mediterranean network (MED-NET), successfully organised an International Conference on Coastal Landscape – Heritage and Contemporary Uses, held in Split from 16 to 18 April. The conference brought together experts and practitioners to discuss sustainable coastal planning in the Mediterranean. The event took place at the premises of PAP/RAC on Thursday, while Friday’s sessions were hosted at the Radisson Blu Resort Split. The conference was organised in partnership with PAP/RAC.
On Friday, PAP/RAC Director Daria Povh Skugor welcomed participants, emphasising the importance of the ICZM Protocol in the Mediterranean and, in particular, the growing importance of resilience in coastal planning amid climate challenges. A presentation by Programme Officer Ante Ivcevic, titled “Toward Resilient Landscapes: Planning Coastal Areas in a Changing Climate,” highlighted the role of the AdriAdapt knowledge resilience platform—soon evolving into MedAdapt. He underscored its application in developing coastal plans across diverse regions, including Šibenik-Knin County in Croatia, Boka Kotorska Bay in Montenegro, and the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region in Morocco.
Concluding the session, PAP/RAC consultant Igor Belamaric presented the Centre’s guidelines "Nature-based solutions for adaptation to climate change in different coastal typologies in the Mediterranean", reinforcing the need for integrated, ecosystem-based approaches to coastal management in the Mediterranean.
The conference reaffirmed the importance of regional cooperation and knowledge-sharing in addressing the evolving pressures on coastal landscapes.
