On the basis of the Feasibility Study for CAMP Mar Menor, which was prepared and presented at the Contracting Parties meeting in Catania (November 2003), an Agreement between MAP and the Spanish authorities was prepared and is going to be signed in the following weeks.
The proposal to start a CAMP project called “Mar Menor Lagoon and Its Area of Influence” of the Region of Murcia was presented by the Spanish authorities to UNEP-MAP in July 2002.
The CAMP area covers an extension of approximately 1,507 km2, 1,250 km2 of which belong to the land area, amounting to 56% of the regional littoral area and to 11% of the region's territory. The area likewise includes about 257 km2 of marine territory, 135 km2 of which belong to the Mar Menor lagoon. Besides the activities at the project level, including Project Co-ordination and Integration of Project Activities; Training; Participation, information and communication; Systemic and Prospective Sustainability Analysis, the following individual project activities are envisaged: Territorial sustainability; a set of Sustainability-oriented activities for different sectors (tourism, agriculture, fishing and aquaculture, energy, industry and mining); and Conservation of Natural and Cultural resources. Several MAP RACs will be involved in this project, namely: PAP/RAC, BP/RAC, SPA/RAC, ERS/RAC and CP/RAC. Find more info about the project in the Feasibility Study.
