The conference room of the Mediterranean pavilion, the first-ever regional pavilion at the United Nations Climate Change Conferences, was packed on Saturday 12th November, when PAP/RAC held its side event entitled “From science to action”. During the event, moderated by PAP/RAC director Ms Željka Škaričić, participants embarked on a journey from scientific findings to their application through „on the ground“ actions. Scientific insights related to the impacts of climate change on the sea and the coast were presented by Prof. Piero Lionello, co-ordinator of the Special report on coastal risks of MedECC, while PAP/RAC representative Ms Povh Škugor demonstrated experiences from Coastal Plans based on the ICZM Protocol, implemented within the GEF MEDprogramme SCCF project. It was demonstrated how the successful process of the Coastal plan preparation supports governance building in the area. The key message reflected the importance of an integrated and systemic approach to coastal planning since it doesn't only prevent maladaptation, but also contributes to mitigation. Adaptation has its limits for the coastal zones. Threfore, there is no adaptation without mitigation. Ms Mios from Plan Bleu presented their experiences from several “on the ground” projects. A vivid discussion followed the side event, which continued around the Mediterranean pavilion, in partnership with the Union for the Mediterranean, UNEP/MAP and the PRIMA Foundation, along with a coalition of institutions dealing with climate change in the region.
