Resilient Mediterranean Coasts: Guidelines for Nature-Based Adaptation Strategies

PAP/RAC is proud to announce the release of - “Nature-Based Solutions for Adaptation to Climate Change in Different Coastal Typologies of the Mediterranean”!

Developed this year with contributions from numerous esteemed regional experts, this publication offers a comprehensive vision for addressing the pressing impacts of climate change on the Mediterranean’s vulnerable coastal areas through Nature-based Solutions (NbS).

The guidelines provide an in-depth analysis of the region’s diverse ecosystems and the challenges they face, including biodiversity loss and escalating climate risks. They strongly advocate for NbS approaches that prioritize restoring and protecting coastal ecosystems - as powerful tools to enhance resilience and promote human well-being.

The publication focuses on four key coastal typologies:

  • Entirely artificial coasts
  • Semi-artificial coasts
  • Transitional coasts
  • Semi-natural coasts

Each typology is addressed with tailored strategies, showcasing the critical roles of wetlands, dunes, and forests in climate adaptation. The guidelines also include inspiring examples from nearly every Mediterranean country, highlighting successful ecosystem restoration projects, innovative green infrastructure, and localized approaches to climate challenges.

Beyond technical insights, the guidelines emphasize the urgent need for integrated, cross-sectoral strategies and robust international cooperation to maximise the effectiveness of NbS across the Mediterranean region.

This is more than a set of recommendations - it is a call to action for governments, organizations, and communities to unite in safeguarding Mediterranean coasts. Together, we can build a resilient future that sustains ecosystems, livelihoods, and heritage for generations to come.
