PAP/RAC Showcases Progress in Lebanon: Advancing Integrated Coastal Zone Management

PAP/RAC successfully took the stage during a recent event in Lebanon dedicated to coastal sustainability and collaboration under the GEF-funded MedProgramme. The gathering brought together national and regional partners to advance ongoing efforts that support the protection and sustainable use of Lebanon’s coastal areas.

As the institution leading the update of Lebanon’s national Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Strategy and Law, and with support of the Ministry of Environment, PAP/RAC presented the latest progress achieved in coordination with a group of national experts. The session offered an opportunity to openly address key implementation challenges and engage stakeholders in shaping future actions. In support of a strongly participatory approach, Plan Bleu/RAC facilitated a Climagine workshop that focused on developing sustainability indicators for the updated ICZM strategy. Stakeholders from various sectors contributed valuable insights to ensure that the new strategy reflects real needs on the ground and aligns with Lebanon’s long-term coastal management priorities.

The event also highlighted progress under the Integrated Management Plan for the Damour Area. PAP/RAC, together with its partners GWP-MED, UNESCO-IHP, and Plan Bleu/RAC, showcased ongoing initiatives aiming to strengthen environmental stewardship and enhance resilience of this valuable coastal zone. Additionally, PAP/RAC contributed to the MedProgramme Outreach workshop, where Programme Officer Ante Ivčević shared lessons learned from successful interventions in Morocco and Montenegro. These experiences will feed into the MedProgramme’s Best Practices Replication Atlas, supporting knowledge transfer and helping accelerate effective solutions across the region.

PAP/RAC remains committed to supporting Lebanon in building a sustainable coastal future by promoting integrated planning, strengthening governance, and empowering local and national actors. The event marked another important step forward in this shared effort.
