Italian coastal managers, scientists and environmentalists are preparing for the climate change challenge

On October 26th, PAP/RAC representative participated in the workshop organized in the framework of the “ECOMONDO – The green technology expo” in Rimini, Italy. The workshop entitled: “Coastal areas and the climate change challenge – green ports, urban areas, coastal management and adaptation for a sustainable Blue Growth” was organized by the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition, ISPRA, TNEC Regions, GNRAC (National Research Group for Coastal Environment issues), LEGAMBIENTE (environmental association). Being a country with a highly developed and used coastal zone, Italy is particularly vulnerable to raising sea levels. Beach economy in Italy is among the most vivid in the world. Its low-laying sandy coastlines are exposed to erosion for decades. Due to these reasons, Italian coastal practitioners are rather aware of the challenges that climate change will bring. The objective of this conference was to give a contribution in raising awareness of threats, as well as of opportunities that climate change brings, starting from new development models, infrastructure design, the transformation of coastal urban areas and waterfronts. At the meeting, several national and international good practices were presented. PAP/RAC presented Coastal plans according to the ICZM Protocol for the Mediterranean.
