On 26 May 2008, the European Parliament hosted a TV Gala Ceremony organised by "Energy Globe" to award the best 2007 projects in five categories: Air, (Fronius International GmbH for the project "Fronius demonstrates a CO2-free transport logistic solution"); Water (Swiss Association for International Cooperation for the project "Helvatas ensures sustainable water supply in Mozambique"); Earth (Ciudad Saludable for the project "Sustainable solid waste management program in Peru"); Fire (Solar Millennium AG for "Andasol solar power plant" projects); and Youth (The Energy and Sustainability Programme ESKOM / Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa for the project "Action-based program triggers lifestyle choices concerning climate change"). The participants to the Ceremony selected among the winners of these five categories the overall winner, which is the Austrian project "Fronius demonstrates a CO2-free transport logistic solution". The awards were presented by the highest EU officials and other world famous personalities like Hans-Gert Pöttering, Janez Jansa, José Manuel Barroso, Kofi Annan, etc. An honorary award was presented to Mikhail Gorbachev for its efforts in preserving the environment.
The awards for the national winners, among which the "Destinations" project for Algeria, were presented during a ceremony organised the same day in the morning, at the European Parliament as well. After an introductory speech given by Mikhail Gorbachev certificates were presented to the national winners from 109 countries by Maneka Ghandi, the Chairwoman of the Energy Globe Jury.
