Understanding the Nature is a key for climate change adaptation

A regional workshop took place in Rome 23-24 April 2024 to present and discuss the draft Guidelines on NbS for adaptation to climate change in different coastal typologies of the Mediterranean. It was organised by PAP/RAC with the financial support of the Child-Project 2.1 of the GEF MedProgramme and attended by representatives from 14 countries as well as colleagues from INFO/RAC. The Guidelines are built around the concept that understanding of functioning of ecosystems at larger scale and their resilience is a key to successful adaptation what was appreciated a lot by the meeting. Providing the four main coastal types and different options for adaptation to climate change is another innovative aspect of the document. The meeting welcomed the presentation of the specific coastal ecosystems derived from the ICZM Protocol, the challenges faced by the coastal zones and proposed solutions. Examples of best practices form all over Mediterranean are provided, too.

The comments and suggestions for the improvement of the document will assist the Centre to finalise the Guidelines.
