On December 10, 2024, the Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort in Donji Stoliv, Montenegro, will host a significant event to tackle the challenges of climate change and drive sustainable development in the Boka Kotorska region. The conference, titled “Collaborating for a Sustainable Future: Adapting to Climate Change in Boka Kotorska While Enabling Socio-Economic Growth,” will bring together key experts and stakeholders from government, academia, NGOs, and the private sector to chart a path forward for one of the Mediterranean’s most iconic coastal areas.
Coastal plan - a blueprint for sustainability
Boka Kotorska is renowned for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. However, it faces mounting challenges from overdevelopment, population pressures, and the impacts of climate change, including wildfires, floods, and extreme weather events.
These issues are addressed in the Coastal Management Plan for Boka Kotorska Bay. Developed through an extensive three-year exploration of environmental challenges and opportunities, the Plan is designed to balance environmental preservation with sustainable development in this UNESCO Heritage site. It provides actionable strategies to safeguard the region's natural beauty, cultural heritage, and economic vitality.
Key themes and objectives
This important event will:
- Spotlight critical issues outlined in the Coastal Management Plan
- Define practical steps to build a climate-adaptive, resilient future
- Explore financing mechanisms to implement jointly identified priority measures
By focusing on actionable solutions, the conference aims to turn sustainability goals into reality and foster effective collaboration among all stakeholders.
A collaborative effort
This Plan represents a significant achievement within the framework of the MedProgramme and would not have been possible without the support from the Global Environment Facility. It is the result of the collaborative efforts involving the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development, and Northern Region Development, the municipalities of Kotor, Tivat, and Herceg Novi, our expert local teams, our partner Plan Bleu, who hosted the interactive Climagine Workshops, and all other local and national stakeholders who contributed to the Plan’s development.
Join us in building resilient coasts
Stay tuned for updates and insights from the conference as we work toward a future where environmental conservation and socioeconomic growth go hand in hand.
Together, we are committed to building #ResilientCoasts and ensuring thriving communities across the #Mediterranean.
