CAMP Morocco officially launched

06.05.2008

On April 29, 2008, the town of Chefchaouen hosted the CAMP Morocco Inception Workshop. The workshop has officially marked the start of this important project for the coastal zone of the Central Rif. About fifty participants representing the national, regional and local authorities and institutions, university circles, NGOs and numerous other stakeholders, attended the workshop. They used the opportunity to discuss with the representatives of MAP and PAP/RAC different project activities and usefulness of the project for the Central Rif zone, as well as for the entire country, which will benefit from this project in terms of enforcement of national capacities regarding the ICZM.

In their opening addresses, Secretary General of the Chefchaouen Province and the representative of the SEEE/DSPR underlined the importance of a rapid socio-economic opening up of the Central Rif zone and the advantages that can be taken in this sense from the CAMP. In this context, the Governor of the Province of Chefchaouen received the representatives of MAP, PAP/RAC and SEEE/DSPR, expressing his great interest in project results. He raised hopes that these results would contribute to a sustainable and environment-friendly development of the CAMP zone as one of the rare coastal zones in the Mediterranean which remained untouched to the present day, but which, at the same time, is highly-coveted by many economic sectors.

The workshop was preceded by a one-day training course on ICZM, which has been realised by a MAP consultant and the national team in charge of this activity. In addition to presentations characteristic of the ICZM process, its different stages, and tools that have to be mobilised to succeed to achieving it, the participants benefited from the presence of the team in charge of implementing the awareness-raising/participatory activity, who explained the objectives and steps of this indispensable component of CAMP. The necessity of this type of training courses has been confirmed once again and the participants have expressed their wish to be able to benefit from them throughout the project duration.
