Regional authorities of the Šibenik-Knin County organised a boat trip for the PAP/RAC expert team to visit the project area of the GEF Climate Variability and ICZM Project. Within this project PAP/RAC is preparing, in collaboration with the regional authorities of the Šibenik-Knin County, an ICZM Plan with special focus on climate variability and change. The plan is reaching the end of its establishment stage, with the Inception and Scoping Reports, as well as the Stakeholder Analysis to be presented for adoption during the next month.
The route included the low-laying parts of the coast that are threatened by the sea-level rise, as well as some of the most important islands of the County. By it natural assets, the Šibenik-Knin County is one of the richest Croatian counties. Its coast is extremely developed with more than 280 islands, islets and rocks. The County has 2 exceptional national parks, the Kornati islands and the Krka river, as well as 11 other natural sites of particular value that have been protected. During the establishment stage, the team realised that one of the most imminent threats due to the climate variability and change for this County are forest fires. Therefore, special attention is dedicated to this issue, and the representatives of the firefighters and of the regional office of the State Directorate for the Protection and Rescue accompanied the team on this field trip, and contributed to the discussions on board.
