From 28 February to 2 March 2009, "El Ryadh" hotel at Sidi Fredj in the Algiers area accommodated a series of workshops organised by PAP/RAC and MATET (Ministry of Land-use Planning, Environment and Tourism) in the framework of SMAP and "LIFE-Destinations" projects financed by the European Commission.
On the occasion of the SMAP workshop, a Policy Brief prepared for Algeria was presented. In addition, the workshop was an opportunity to present and discuss joint activities of PAP/RAC and MATET concerning ICZM, which gave rise to the proposal of new policy measures, such as the implementation of a CAMP for several Algerian coastal regions, and launching of the SDAL (Master Plan for Coastal Management).
The "Destinations" workshops were focused on three themes relating to sustainable development of tourism, namely: a carrying capacity assessment (CCA) for tourism, a method of alternative scenaria for tourism development, and environmental management tools for hotel facilities.
