The SimWestMed Regional meeting and the first output of the Var Case Study led by UN Environment/MAP and PAP/RAC took place at the Villa Noailles in Hyères, France, on 5 October 2017. This event took place back-to-back with the Final conference of the CAMP France project organized the following day, and at which all the SimWestMed partners were welcome.
This workshop helped build a shared knowledge basis on MSP implementation and its specificities in the Western Mediterranean. The meeting brought together the project partners, alongside with experts (and/or sub-contractors), who will be working on project activities, and the key stakeholders from the pilot areas (e.g. the local public organisations dealing with coastal and marine management). Two general objectives of the meeting were: to ensure a proper and common understanding, especially regarding MSP in the context of the Barcelona Convention and the LSI interpretation regarding ICZM; to create opportunities for cooperation on the case studies.
The programme was designed in a way that the partners could discuss the further elaboration of the case studies of the project: Var, Tuscany, Gulf of Lion, Strait of Sicily, Tyrrhenian sites. The event allowed partners to exchange on key issues and challenges for the implementation of project activities in the case study sites, as well as to step forward to the operational phase in these areas.
