SPA/RAC organised two back-to-back workshops in Gökova, Türkiye, from 9 to 12 December 2025, focusing on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) and the Climate Change Adaptation Strategies and Action Plan for Coastal Areas.
The first workshop day was dedicated to technical nature-based solutions aimed at preventing or reducing the impacts of climate change on coastal and marine ecosystems, with the goal of enhancing their resilience. Particular attention was given to best practices applicable to the Mediterranean context. The subsequent days focused on the development of climate change adaptation strategies and action plans for coastal areas.
These events provided a valuable opportunity to demonstrate the complementarities between the two Regional Activity Centres. PAP/RAC contributed through the presentation of its Guidelines for Nature-Based Solutions in Different Coastal Typologies. Prior to the practical exercise, the setback requirement of Article 8 of the ICZM Protocol was also introduced. This was followed by a presentation of the ICZM process and its step-by-step approach, illustrated with examples from coastal plans developed in Montenegro and Morocco under the GEF MedProgramme.
The importance of IMAP Common Indicators was highlighted, with particular emphasis on the objectives of the EU-funded EcAp Med PLUS project. Ongoing work on the preparation and upgrading of national integrated IMAPs was presented, alongside the newly adopted candidate Common Indicators related to climate change. These indicators will be instrumental in supporting climate change adaptation strategies and the integration of Nature-Based Solutions into coastal plans.
