On the 17 and 18 May 2021, the “1st International Conference on Water Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development WEPSD-2020” was organised in Rogner hotel in Tirana. This two-day conference, organised by the Academy of Sciences of Albania with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF Adriatic project) brought together a community of national and foreign experts experts (some of them physically and others virtually) to tackle various issues related to water management, marine spatial planning and sustainable development in the Adriatic sub-region. Among the participants, it is worth mentioning the presence of Mr Blendi Klosi, Minister of Tourism and Environment, Prof. Dr. Skender Gjinushi, President of the Academy of Sciences of Albania and Mrs Tatjana Hema, Deputy Coordinator of the UN Environment/Mediterranean Action Plan.
Experts were invited to speak on the following marine topics: marine and costal ecosystems – their services and threats; understanding and efforts towards Good Environmental Status (GES); results of the marine surveys; and marine spatial planning. They also had the opportunity to share their experience and the results from the GEF Adriatic project.
