"Destinations": Algeria proposes a sustainable tourism strategy

29.07.2009

On July 25 and 26 2009, in a high tourist season, the Algerian workshop on the strategy for sustainable tourism development in the zone including the Cap Djinet and Mont Chenoua was held at the "El Marsa" hotel at Sidi Fredj. About sixty representatives of national and local interest groups took an active part at the workshop whose main objectives were: to confirm the optimal scenario proposed at the previous workshop; to present and discuss indicators to measure sustainability of tourism; and to design a strategy for tourism development in the project zone. Working groups have been formed to discuss the above-mentioned issues. The discussion resulted with the proposal of a strategy shared by all the participants and which has still to be polished up by the work of a consultant.

This workshop was also an occasion for the representatives of the project to visit and make environmental audit of the hotel complex of "Corne d'Or" in Tipasa. This complex is the object of a European ecolabel pilot project.

The final versions of sustainable tourism development strategy for the project zone and environmental policy for the complex of Corne d'Or will be presented on the occasion of the final workshop to be organised by the Algerian part of the project and scheduled for end October 2009.
