An informal kick-off meeting of the GEF newly approved concept for the Mediterranean Sea Programme (MedProgramme) on Enhancing Environmental Security was held in Athens, Greece, on 17-19 May 2017. MedProgramme was created to accelerate the implementation of upon agreed priority actions, aiming to reduce the major transboundary environmental stresses affecting the Mediterranean Sea and its coastal areas while strengthening climate resilience and water security, and improving the health and livelihoods of coastal populations.
The main objective of this meeting was to support the preparation of the 7 Child projects of the MedProgramme. 12 partner institutions attended the meeting and discussed jointly on how to integrate their future activities in a way to produce joint effect, to create synergies and the final result which is substantially more than just a sum of all the activities. The PAP/RAC-led Child Project 2.1 entitled Mediterranean coastal zones: climate resilience, water security and habitat protection is to be implemented in all project countries, namely, in Albania, Bosnia &Herzegovina, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Montenegro, Morocco and Tunisia.
