The central regional Coast Day 2013 celebration was organised, as has become tradition, on September 25. This year it was hosted by the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna which chose the city of Rimini as the venue. That was most appropriate since Rimini is famous for its beaches and the central topic of this year’s celebration were exactly the beaches. The host of the celebration was Ms. Paola Gazzolo, Regional Minister for Territorial Safety, Soil and Coast Defence, Civil Protection.
The morning part of the event, more formal, saw a number of relevant presentations. Experience of various Mediterranean countries in ICZM implementation was presented, while the highlight of the day was the presentation by students from the high school “Vladimir Nazor”, Split, Croatia. They spent the summer studying three beaches of Split and presented to the audience a brief history of the beaches, current situation and problems, and made suggestions for improvement.
The afternoon part of the event was more casual, organised on one of Rimini beaches and open to the general public. Among others, traditional way of fishing was presented and some ancient fishing boats shown. The event was a great success and attracted numerous visitors.
