Slovenia continues to protect its coast

04.07.2018

After the recent transformation of the coastal road between Koper and Izola to a recreational space for inhabitants and tourists, the newly established Municipality of Ankaran continues with its efforts to improve its sustainability by classifying Debeli rtic, one of its most valuable and still relatively natural peninsulas, into a Landscape park. It comprises 340 hectares of land and 160 hectares of marine area. The Mayor of Ankaran said that in this way they took “this piece of Slovenian coast from the capital's claws”. Not far away there is the Port of Koper, and interests to develop the land are coming from different sectors, mainly construction and tourism. He advocates for a harmonised policy between the needs of developers and unspoiled nature. The decree provides for the protection of nature and landscape, and lays the foundation for support of sustainable agriculture and fisheries, sustainable forms of recreation and tourism, as well as for valorisation of the cultural heritage. The park will be managed by the Municipality itself.
