The first marine protected area declared in Montenegro

On the very day of Mother Earth celebration, the Nature Park "Platamuni" has been proclaimed the first Marine Protected Area in Montenegro.

The area of Platamuni is located in the zone of maritime domain, between the bay of Trašte and Cape Platamuni, and belongs to the municipality of Kotor. The place was declared protected area primarily due to the value of biodiversity, as it hosts species and habitats of particular importance. "The proclamation of the first marine protected areas is important for further cooperation at the level of the Mediterranean" declared Mr Mitrović, Minister of Ecology, Spatial Planning and Urbanism. This process, which is the result of cooperation among different  national institutions, primarely Institute of Marine Biology,  Environment protection Agency and others, with key contribution of the  NGO sector, benefited from the support of UNEP/MAP, and especially  its centres SPA/RAC, PAP/RAC and MEDPOL, .

This is a major step in the protection of marine biodiversity in the montenegrin part of the Adriatic.
