{"id":8217,"date":"2026-03-31T07:43:28","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T07:43:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging.paprac.org\/projects\/simwested\/"},"modified":"2026-09-08T12:17:48","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T12:17:48","slug":"simwested","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/paprac.org\/hr\/projekti\/simwested\/","title":{"rendered":"SIMWESTMED"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Partnership<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The project was coordinated by CORILA and implemented by a consortium of national authorities, research institutions and regional organisations from France, Italy, Malta and Spain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Key partners:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CEREMA<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">French Biodiversity Agency<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ministry of Environment, Protection of the Territories and the Sea (Italy)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Malta Environment and Planning Authority<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (Italy)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shom<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UNEP\/MAP Coordinating Unit, with INFO\/RAC and PAP\/RAC<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Key objectives<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SIMWESTMED aimed to strengthen both the technical and governance dimensions of MSP, with a particular focus on transboundary cooperation and coherence among the EU member states in the Western Mediterranean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In particular, it aimed to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">improve understanding of maritime uses, pressures and future trends<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">identify spatial demands of key sectors and support conflict resolution and synergies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">address data gaps and improve data sharing and coherence across borders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">develop methodologies for transboundary MSP<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">promote mechanisms for cross-border cooperation and stakeholder engagement in the Western Mediterranean<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0support the consistent application of MSP processes across participating countries<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Main results<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SIMWESTMED generated a shared knowledge base and practical experiences that supported coordinated MSP implementation across the Western Mediterranean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The main results include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">improved data availability and coherence supporting MSP analyses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">identification of spatial demands, conflicts and opportunities for multi-use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">strengthened approaches to transboundary cooperation and stakeholder engagement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">application of tools and methodologies supporting MSP processes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">implementation of pilot case studies addressing MSP challenges in transboundary contexts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Role of PAP\/RAC<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Within the SIMWESTMED project, PAP\/RAC contributed to strengthening the integration of MSP with ICZM and broader policy frameworks, with a focus on land\u2013sea interactions, cross-sector coordination and regional coherence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In particular, PAP\/RAC contributed to key analytical and methodological outputs, including work on the relationship between land\u2013sea interactions (LSI) and ICZM, coordination of sectoral policies, and the development of case studies in the Tyrrhenian area and Var County.
